CNN’s chief international anchor, Christiane Amanpour, says she will leave the network next year, ending a 43-year career there. The 68-year-old journalist said she had decided to part ways with CNN after months of thought and was looking forward to new projects. [1]
Amanpour joined CNN in 1983 as an assistant on its international news desk and became one of its most prominent correspondents, reporting on conflicts and wars. Since 2009, she has presented a nightly interview programme on CNN International. [1]
CNN chairman Mark Thompson said the network would celebrate her work before she departs. In a memo to staff, he said he and Amanpour had discussed her decision for several months and that he had come to accept it was the right time for her, personally and professionally. [1]
Amanpour recalled covering the First Gulf War, Bosnia, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran. She thanked the colleagues and crews she had worked with, saying they had sought facts, evidence and humanity in their reporting. [1]
