Wales have recalled Harry Wilson and Joe Rodon for their final two Nations League matches, while 20-year-old goalkeeper Joe Duncan has received his first senior call-up as head coach Craig Bellamy looks to strengthen a thin pool of younger keepers.
Wilson, a Leeds United attacking midfielder, has not played for Wales since March because of injuries. Rodon, also at Leeds, returns despite not having played since injuring his hamstring in August. Bellamy said both were important to the team, but added that they would need to come through their clubs’ matches before joining the squad.
Duncan, on loan at National League side Southend United from Bristol City, is the squad’s only new call-up. He has two caps for Wales Under-21s and qualifies through his maternal grandfather, who is from Cardiff. He replaces Everton goalkeeper Tom King.
Bellamy said the age of Wales’ current goalkeepers was “a clear issue”, with Karl Darlow aged 36, Danny Ward 33 and King 31. He said Duncan might not be ready for senior international football now, but that the team needed to look to the future.
Wales are third in Nations League Group A4, with one win from four matches. They visit Norway on 14 November before hosting Portugal three days later. The top two qualify for the quarter-finals; third place brings a relegation play-off, while bottom place could mean a play-off or direct relegation.
