The temporary overnight shelter for asylum seekers who cannot find a bed in Ter Apel is due to move to an event site in Beilen on 12 October. The existing sites in Zuidwolde and Warffum will close, Dutch news agency ANP reported. Midden-Drenthe municipality is making space available at the request of the minister for Asylum and Migration. [1]
The Red Cross said the Beilen site would have room for around 200 people a night, though numbers using the shelter vary. On the Wednesday-to-Thursday night before the announcement, 148 people stayed at the Zuidwolde and Warffum sites. A Red Cross spokesperson said the move would shorten the journey from Ter Apel; the drive to Warffum takes about an hour. [1]
The overnight shelter is intended to remain available until 25 January. The Red Cross says a lasting solution would be preferable to repeatedly moving people between temporary sites. [1]
