MPs from several parties raised concerns in a Dutch parliamentary debate about young people with complex needs in youth care. Some said the children’s safety often could not be guaranteed and that the care they received was not always adequate. The debate included children sent abroad for care and those receiving one-to-one supervision in closed settings. [1]
JA21 MP Ingrid Coenradie said she was deeply shocked by accounts of young people staying in Spain or Morocco for youth care. ANP also cited a 15 September report by the Dutch current affairs programme Nieuwsuur alleging that young people sent abroad for care had been confined and exploited, and that their care might be outdated and ineffective. The number of children abroad for youth care is unknown. MPs asked youth minister Mirjam Sterk how many there are, where they are staying and why they were sent abroad. [1]
