Dutch finance minister Eelco Heinen said during a debate on public finances that he expected employers and unions to reach a social agreement yielding greater savings than the government had projected. He said the groups had indicated they could deliver that result. [1]
The government has removed planned multibillion-euro cuts to social security benefits from its budget to give employers and unions time to develop a plan. While it awaits a deal, it intends to find the savings at other ministries. The education ministry could be particularly badly affected if the agreement does not materialise or delivers too little. Heinen said the bar for a deal was high, but argued that the concern about education would become irrelevant if the social partners delivered what he said they had promised. [1]
