Ethiopian federal soldiers and fighters from the allied Tigray Peace Force have entered Alamata, the militia said on 28 September. Municipal authorities said the army had taken control of the town after intense fighting. [3]
Alamata lies near Tigray’s border with Amhara, on a road towards the regional capital, Mekelle. It is a supply hub for troops, food and fuel, and changed hands several times during the 2020–22 civil war. [2] [3]
Two diplomatic sources told Reuters that Alamata had fallen. A third said pro-government forces had entered but it was unclear whether they had full control. A source linked to forces opposing the government said they were retreating. [2] Conflict monitor ACLED recorded the seizure as reported and said government forces had regained ground in and around Alamata. [4] [5]
The advance comes amid renewed fighting between Tigrayan and government forces, which ACLED dates to 1 August. ACLED says Tigrayan forces seized airports at Mekelle, Aksum and Shire on 23 September. Internet and telephone networks in Tigray remained disrupted for a fourth day on 28 September, Reuters reported. [6] [2]
