Deep Purple have postponed the rest of their European and UK tour, including a show at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome scheduled for next week, after singer Ian Gillan’s medical team warned of “very serious risks” if he continued performing.
The British rock band said on Monday that earlier German dates had already been cancelled because of what it described as a “medical emergency” involving Gillan. The remaining tour dates are postponed “until further notice”, the singer said in a statement shared through the band’s official channels.
“I had hoped I would be given the go-ahead to continue to the end of the tour, but there were very serious risks involved,” Gillan said. He added that the decision had been made on the advice of his medical team and management, and thanked fans for their well-wishes.
The band has not said what condition Gillan is being treated for. Last year, the 81-year-old singer said he had lost most of his sight. Gillan has been Deep Purple’s singer since 1969; the band’s hits include “Smoke on the Water”, “Black Night” and “Child in Time”.
