A resolution calling for long-term central government funding for asylum reception and housing won 99.6% of votes at a meeting of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG) in Lichtenvoorde on Wednesday, 30 September. Municipalities want to move away from reliance on temporary funding schemes, ANP reported via Nieuws.nl. [1]
The VNG is also calling for improvements to the asylum reception system and funding for smaller reception sites. Its chair, Sharon Dijksma, said municipalities agree that the current system does not work. The association also wants a long-term plan for displaced Ukrainians who will remain in the Netherlands. Municipalities also want a flexible accommodation scheme lasting at least five years, allowing one site to serve displaced Ukrainians, asylum seekers and people granted residence permits. [1]
