Sweden’s Andreas Almgren won the New York City Marathon on his marathon debut, finishing in 2:06:01 after pulling away from Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa in the final kilometre. Dutch defending champion Abdi Nageeye came 13th in 2:07:58.
Crippa finished second, 13 seconds behind Almgren. Nageeye, who won the race two years ago as the first Dutchman to do so, had been aiming for a top-five finish.
Almgren, 31, is the European 10,000-metre champion and the world half-marathon champion. The race covered 42.195 kilometres and finished in Central Park.
