Police fired tear gas and clashed with protesters on the outskirts of Paris during a third weekend of nationwide demonstrations over the rising cost of living and poor public services, the BBC reports. France’s interior ministry said more than 320,000 people took to the streets across the country and at least 290 protesters were arrested.
Police estimated that about 70,000 people joined the demonstration in Paris. Authorities had made extensive preparations to prevent a repeat of violence, rioting and looting reported two weeks earlier.
