Spain’s maritime rescue service brought more than 500 migrants ashore in the previous 24 hours after they set out for the Canary Islands in boats, according to a report by news agency ANP citing Spanish media.
A boat carrying 151 people, including eight children, was spotted at sea at 11am and taken to El Hierro. Most of those aboard were men. They told rescuers they had begun their journey six days earlier from Jinack, in The Gambia. Rescue services said they were in good health, ANP reported.
Another 244 people arrived on El Hierro aboard a Spanish rescue vessel in the early morning. A further 122 men were taken to a reception centre on Tenerife after reaching El Hierro by boat on Saturday.
The report also cited newspaper El Mundo as saying a small vessel carrying 69 people was in waters near Gran Canaria.
