Cristiano Ronaldo announces retirement from Portugal team

Cristiano Ronaldo says he is retiring from international football with Portugal, the country’s record goalscorer and most-capped player, in an announcement on Instagram.

The 41-year-old’s decision follows a dispute with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo left the national squad on 30 September, the day before a Nations League match against Denmark, and accused Jesus of breaking his word twice. He later apologised for his behaviour and said he remained available to play for Portugal.

The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently suspended him for 30 days and fined him €255. The suspension expired at the end of October, so he did not miss any international matches because of it. He will continue playing for Saudi club Al-Nassr.
