Jackson police believe Tasia Fortune was already dead when her body was hung from a tree, a detective testified at a preliminary hearing on Friday, 25 September. Fortune, a 29-year-old Black mother of four, was found behind a vacant house in Jackson, Mississippi, on 3 August. Her death has been ruled a homicide. [3] [4]
Detective Samuel Dukes said the hanging had been staged, citing the medical examiner’s opinion. He alleged that Fortune was killed after a dispute over drugs and was probably brought to the site after her death. [3] [4]
Three people have been charged with murder. Jarques Ratliff, 51, and Earnest Lloyd Jr, 25, have pleaded not guilty. Eric Clark, 45, surrendered and was charged on Friday. Ratliff’s lawyer, Toney Baldwin, says his client was not involved. Ratliff’s preliminary hearing is due to resume on 30 September. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]
