Authorities in Bangkok have declared a flood disaster covering all 50 districts after heavy rain flooded homes and roads, ANP/AFP reported on 26 September. The designation gives local organisations powers to respond. [1]
Heavy rain began on the afternoon of 24 September. By the following day, prolonged downpours had caused widespread road flooding and severe traffic disruption in many parts of the Thai capital, with problems also reported in neighbouring Nonthaburi. [1] [2]
AFP journalists reported flooding in many homes and restaurants. Somkid Pheuk-ngam, a 67-year-old vendor living near a canal north of central Bangkok, told AFP that the water had reached her waist and that she had kept her shop closed for two days. [1]
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt warned residents in low-lying canal-side communities in eastern Bangkok on 25 September to move belongings to higher ground and remain alert until 27 September, The Nation Thailand reported. Min Buri, Lat Krabang and Sai Mai were among the areas being watched most closely as several canals reached critical levels. [3]
In parts of Sai Mai’s Soi 43 and Soi 80, street flooding reached about 20–30 centimetres on 25 September. The Bang Khen District Office also warned drivers that the flooded U-turn beneath Bang Bua Bridge was impassable for smaller vehicles. [2]
The city stepped up drainage operations, using pumping stations, large tunnels and sluice gates to move water from the canal network towards the Chao Phraya River. [3]
Conditions varied across Bangkok. Chadchart said on 25 September that widespread road flooding had not developed in the inner city and that central areas beside the Chao Phraya were not then a major concern. He identified the eastern districts as the main focus of the flood response.
