A worker renovating Michelle Harwood’s home in Hockley, Essex, found the letter in a cavity beneath the stairs and passed it to her. Dated 12 August 1982, it had been written by Rachel Miles when she was 10. [1]
Harwood posted about the discovery in a local Facebook group. Within an hour, people had identified and tagged Miles, now a 54-year-old teacher in Milton Keynes, and she replied. Harwood told the BBC that the words “to the finder” gave her goosebumps. [1]
Miles told the BBC she wrote the note after her father found the space behind the stairs. She had thought it would be nice to “post a letter for the future” and was delighted someone had found it. [1]
