Cargo handled by sea at North Sea Port — serving Vlissingen and Terneuzen in the Netherlands and Ghent in Belgium — rose 1.6% year on year to 17.2 million tonnes in the third quarter, according to the port operator. It called this the strongest quarter in four years.
The increase was led by liquid bulk, including diesel, gas oil and basic chemicals, where volumes climbed 8.5%. General cargo, including steel products, rose by more than 20%.
North Sea Port said drought had only a limited effect on seaborne cargo volumes. The operator said the result offered a prospect of a positive trend towards the end of the year.
