Brown bear 89 Backpack won the final ballot with 103,344 votes, beating bear 910, who received 98,253. Katmai National Park in Alaska runs the annual competition, now in its 13th year. The US National Park Service thanked the 16 bears involved. [1]
Backpack’s mother, Holly, won Fat Bear Week in 2019. He got his name as a cub, when he would climb onto her back as she crossed the Brooks River. Runner-up 910 is female and has raised both her own cub and an adopted niece. [1]
The result reflects the public vote rather than a weigh-in: the finalists’ latest weights had not been released when the winner was announced. [1]
