James Anderson says he had hoped to continue with Lancashire, but has not ruled out playing elsewhere after the county decided against renewing his contract for 2027.

James Anderson has stopped short of announcing his retirement after Lancashire told the 44-year-old it would not renew his contract for the 2027 season, leaving open the possibility he could play for another county.
The England record wicket-taker said he was sad to leave the club he first represented in 2001. “If it was up to me it wouldn't have ended like this,” he wrote on Instagram, while wishing Lancashire’s players and fans well.
Anderson had planned to play in the summer of 2027. The BBC reports that a number of counties are interested in signing him, though any move may depend on the terms offered and the practicalities of spending time away from his home in Cheshire.
Lancashire said the decision was part of a wider rebuild. Director of cricket Paul Farbrace said the club wanted to gain promotion from Division Two and then challenge for the Division One title within three to four years. He said Lancashire had decided not to extend Anderson’s contract as it pursued those plans.
The county finished second-bottom in Division Two last season. Anderson, who captained Lancashire in the County Championship in 2026, took 50 wickets and was named the club’s Championship player of the year.
He has taken 911 international wickets, an England record, and 443 first-class wickets for Lancashire. After his England career ended in 2024, he continued playing for the county; he said at the time that he felt he could play for three more years.
