Infrastructure minister Vincent Karremans officially brought the new pumps and sluices into use at Den Oever on Thursday, 1 October, marking the end of the main programme to strengthen and renew the Afsluitdijk. The project began in 2019, ANP reported via Nieuws.nl. [1]
Rijkswaterstaat says the new facilities can discharge 45% more water from the IJsselmeer into the Wadden Sea. It says the extra capacity is needed as the storm and high-water season begins and to help protect the Netherlands as sea levels rise. [1]
Other projects are still planned on and around the Afsluitdijk, although the main renovation is now complete. [1]
