Nathan Fielder had the right to stop work on *You Can See Everything* at any point, after agreeing a “kill switch” with production company A24, co-director Lance Oppenheim says. The arrangement gave the filmmakers freedom to explore the documentary about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes without having to use footage they considered unusable.
Oppenheim described the agreement in an interview with IndieWire. A24 agreed before filming to fund the project and let the directors decide whether to discard it if they found they had no usable material, he said.
The filmmakers had only 34 days before Holmes was due to enter prison to serve her sentence, according to Oppenheim. He said Fielder remained uncertain about whether the documentary could be made, but the agreement gave the team room to investigate the story. “This was the first time I thought: ‘We really have the space to investigate, without anyone looking over our shoulder,’” Oppenheim said. “I wish I had that on every project, because then you work purely out of curiosity. You can just fish around.”
Holmes was convicted in 2022 of defrauding investors and sentenced to more than 11 years in prison. *You Can See Everything* opened in North American cinemas the previous week, taking €15 million in its opening weekend, Nieuws.nl reported.
The film is due to screen at Rotterdam’s Kino cinema and Amsterdam’s IDFA documentary festival, and is scheduled for release in Dutch cinemas in January, according to Nieuws.nl.
