Orléans has imposed a two-night curfew on children under 15 as thousands of people are expected at a far-right party congress and counter-demonstrations in the French city this weekend. Mayor Serge Grouard says the measure is intended to protect public order and reduce the risk of violence as crowds disperse.
The curfew runs from 9pm to 6am on Saturday and Sunday. The city expects thousands of demonstrators in addition to the people attending the Rassemblement National (RN) congress.
“We are not afraid of the demonstration itself, but rather of what happens when the crowd disperses,” Grouard said, according to ANP, AFP and Belga.
About 50 political parties, trade unions and organisations have called for protests against the congress and “against racism, fascism and imperialism”. Olivier Faure, leader of the Socialist Party, is among the politicians expected in Orléans.
The curfew comes amid a weekend of heightened security in France. Large demonstrations are also planned across the country against the cost of living and cuts to public services. Similar protests a week earlier were accompanied by riots, destruction and looting, ANP, AFP and Belga reported.
