World Triathlon’s partnership with the fast-growing Hyrox fitness race could open a path towards future Olympic recognition, but athletes say they want clarity on what triathlon stands to gain.
Review information is loading.
Hyrox has joined forces with World Triathlon, raising questions among athletes about whether the fast-growing indoor fitness race could compete with triathlon for Olympic attention and resources.
The agreement makes Hyrox a recognised discipline within World Triathlon. That could make it eligible for future Olympic and Paralympic inclusion, though it is too late for the Los Angeles 2028 Games. No decision has been announced to add it to a future programme.
Hyrox combines eight 1km runs with eight exercise stations, including sled pushes, rowing and lunges. More than 100 events are held each year across more than 30 countries. The organisers reported 1.5 million participants during the 2025-26 season, up from 650,000 the previous year, and projected more than two million in the current season.
Some triathletes say they were caught off guard by the announcement and want clearer details about the partnership. British athlete Max Stapley said he first heard about it on Instagram. European champion Roksana Slupek said she was not opposed to the idea but wanted to know what triathlon would gain.
World Triathlon said the agreement was approved by its executive board, which includes elected athlete representatives, and announced through its usual procedures. It says the partnership is intended to attract new audiences and create opportunities across the sport. The organisation said triathlon would remain at the heart of its work and that it was planning for Brisbane 2032.
Olympic bronze medallist Sam Dickinson said the move made sense as a way to encourage participation, but added that the practical details were not yet clear. British Triathlon said it was waiting for the partnership’s full operational, governance and commercial framework.
World Triathlon already oversees other disciplines, including aquathlon and duathlon. Fitness Racing was added to its constitution in October 2025, with support from a majority of its national federations. The unresolved question is how the new partnership will work in practice, and whether it will bring benefits to triathlon as well as Hyrox.
