EU hygiene rules for products that come into contact with drinking water begin applying to new products on 1 January 2027. Existing certified products have a transition period, so the change does not mean householders must replace their taps immediately.

New European hygiene requirements for products that come into contact with drinking water will apply to new products from 1 January 2027. Existing products with an accepted Kiwa Water Mark have until 1 January 2033 at the latest to meet the requirements, according to the Dutch public health institute RIVM.
That distinction means the change is not a general order for householders to replace existing taps or shower fittings. The rules cover products used in new installations or when existing drinking-water systems are repaired or rebuilt, and are intended to prevent harmful substances leaching into water and microbial growth.
The European Commission says the new framework creates common hygiene standards and certification across the EU. Products covered by the rules will receive an EU certificate and marking. During the transition, an existing product can continue to be used in a member state until 31 December 2032 if it meets the relevant national certification criteria.
In the Netherlands, the Kiwa Water Mark is expected to be phased out as the European mark is introduced. The transition applies to products with an accepted quality certificate; RIVM’s guidance does not establish that every existing tap can remain installed indefinitely.
