BBC News reports that Hurricane Isaias made landfall in Florida’s western Panhandle on Friday evening after weakening to a Category 2 storm with winds of 110mph (175km/h). People on the Florida Panhandle coast were told to seek immediate shelter under an extreme wind warning, the broadcaster says. [1]
The BBC’s map projected landfall on Alabama’s coast, while its written account said the storm came ashore in Florida. [1]
The report says states of emergency were issued in Florida, Alabama and Georgia, and meteorologists warned that storm surge could bring up to 9ft (2.7m) of flooding in some areas. Florida ordered evacuations in coastal communities, while Alabama ordered non-residents, tourists and visitors to leave specified counties, according to the broadcaster. [1]
Citing PowerOutage.us, BBC News reports pre-landfall power-outage figures of more than 350,000 in Florida and another 170,000 in Alabama. The National Weather Service forecast late on Friday that the storm’s centre would cross Alabama and move into the Tennessee Valley on Saturday and Sunday, according to the report. [1]
