Pakistan carried out airstrikes in Afghanistan overnight into Thursday, saying it had targeted militant hideouts at two locations. Afghanistan’s Taliban government said nine civilians, including women and children, were killed and 11 people were wounded. [2] [4]
Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said three homes were destroyed in Kunar and Helmand provinces. Pakistan’s information ministry said initial reports suggested 22 militants had been killed and asserted that its strikes had caused no civilian harm. Pakistan did not identify the locations it said it had targeted. [2] [3] [4]
The strikes come amid cross-border tensions. In an August assessment, UN sanctions monitors said escalating attacks on Pakistan by the Pakistani Taliban had prompted military exchanges. They also reported continued Afghan Taliban support for the group; the Afghan Taliban has denied harbouring terrorist groups. [7]
