De Hypotheker recorded an 11% year-on-year rise in mortgage applications from single people in the third quarter of 2026. Applications from couples rose by 0.6%, while total applications increased by 3%. The figures cover applications handled by the Dutch mortgage chain, not completed home purchases across the Netherlands. [1]
De Hypotheker also says 34% of homebuyers now purchase alone. In its figures, single buyers took out mortgages averaging €298,000, down 2% from a year earlier. Couples borrowed an average of €418,000, up 2%. Those amounts describe mortgage loans rather than property prices. [1]
ANP suggests that former rental homes being put up for sale — often smaller and cheaper properties — may be helping single buyers. De Hypotheker reported more applications from people moving home, while applications from first-time buyers fell by 0.4%. [1]
Applications for mortgages to fund renovations or energy-efficiency work fell by 3%. De Hypotheker thinks rising mortgage rates may be prompting homeowners to postpone those projects. [1]
