Trump says he expects to appoint an AI adviser within days, as technology companies sign a voluntary safety accord centred on self-regulation.

Donald Trump said on 29 September that he expected to name an artificial intelligence adviser, or “czar”, within three or four days. He gave no name or formal remit for the role. The timetable is more specific than his 19 September pledge to appoint an AI czar and form an “AI Force”. [2] [7]
The announcement followed a White House meeting with technology executives. Trump stressed industry self-regulation, while citing the Justice Department and FBI as existing safeguards. After the meeting, he said companies understood that they had to police themselves. [8] [2]
Trump and leaders of Anthropic, Google, Meta, OpenAI, Nvidia and xAI signed a voluntary accord on AI safety. It calls for internal checks on advanced models, teams to oversee those checks, independent external assessments and board-level oversight. Asked whether the agreement was binding, Trump described it as “morally binding”. [5] [3] [2]
Some measures in the accord had already been adopted or promised in some form, the Associated Press reported. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei said AI had “very real risks” and that how to address them remained under discussion. Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg called the accord a starting point. The accord calls for regular meetings on safety standards and leaves open the possibility of future laws or regulations. It sets no deadline for the companies’ checks or external assessments.
