The former guided-missile frigate USS Klakring was struck by a missile fired from USS Paul Ignatius and a torpedo fired from USS Massachusetts during Exercise Atlantic Thunder 2026. It sank in the North Atlantic about 170 miles (274 km) off the Outer Hebrides. The exercise involved US and UK forces, and the Royal Navy also tested weapons during it. [1]
The US Navy said the ship had been cleaned to remove contaminants and old equipment before it was sunk. Personnel also checked for whales and dolphins before live firing began. A navy spokesperson said the preparations would keep the exercise’s environmental impact minimal. [1]
USS Klakring entered service in 1983 and was decommissioned in 2013, before being used in this year’s exercise. [1]
