EU residents made 1.20 billion trips for personal and professional reasons in 2025, Eurostat said, with 92% of those journeys taking place within the EU. The total was up 1.4%, or 17 million trips, on 2024. [1]
Most trips were domestic: 848 million, or 70% of the total. Another 264 million (22%) went to a different EU country. The remaining 8% went outside the EU, although fewer than half of those trips had destinations outside Europe.
The share of trips taken domestically varied sharply between countries. It was highest in Romania, at 89%, followed by Spain at 87%. Luxembourg had the lowest share, at 5%, followed by Belgium at 29% and Malta at 32%.
Despite the greater number of domestic trips, EU residents spent more on foreign trips: €379.4 billion, compared with €266.2 billion on domestic journeys. The foreign-trip figure includes travel beyond the EU as well as to other member states. [1]
