Birmingham and Wales have been named as the next locations for targeted investigations by the national inquiry into child sexual abuse by grooming gangs. The statutory inquiry, chaired by former children’s commissioner Baroness Anne Longfield, will examine abuse and exploitation in both places, as well as the response of organisations responsible for protecting children. The inquiry said its decision to investigate Birmingham reflected survivor experiences, indications of prevalence, harm and risk, and public concern. Panel member Zoë Billingham said investigators would examine what organisations knew, how decisions were made and how agencies worked together. The inquiry has the power to compel individuals and institutions to explain their actions or inaction. [1]
The inquiry began work in April 2026 with a £65m budget. Investigations had already been announced for Oldham, Bradford and Keighley, and London. [1]
