French authorities say a wildfire that broke out near Saumos, in the Gironde region, in July has been extinguished after two months. An ANP/AFP/Reuters report describes it as France’s largest wildfire since 1949. [1]
The fire threatened the Cap-Ferret peninsula and the outskirts of Bordeaux. It affected 42,000 hectares, of which 37,296 hectares were destroyed. Some 224,000 people were evacuated, and more than 3,300 firefighters helped tackle the blaze. No deaths have been reported. [1]
Across France, wildfires had destroyed about 98,000 hectares by late September this year, the news agencies reported — the country’s largest total since 1976. [1]
