An inspector will consider Sue Stubley’s appeal against the council’s rejection of her proposed £2m wildlife hospital near Newmarket.

The proposed Long Acre Wildlife Hospital would occupy 27 acres at Kirtling, near Newmarket. Sue Stubley, who founded the Suffolk Hedgehog Hospital, wants the £2m facility to care for vulnerable animals from Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk. It could accommodate up to 500 hedgehogs at a time. [1]
East Cambridgeshire District Council rejected the plans in July 2025 and again in January 2026. Council planning officers raised concerns about traffic, the justification for building at that location, harm to the area’s character and disturbance to nearby residents. [1]
Stubley told the BBC she had thought her chances on appeal were slim, but welcomed the opportunity to discuss the proposal and answer questions. [1]
The Planning Inspectorate has appointed a planner to consider the appeal, not approved the hospital. A meeting involving Stubley, councillors, the inspector and members of the public is scheduled for 20 October. [1]
