John Mayer has launched his own record label, Sob Rock Records, and is partnering with Mercury Records as he prepares to release a new single, “Tom and Jerry”. The track is due out on 23 October, five years after his last solo single, “Wild Blue”, according to Billboard Philippines.
Mayer said working with Mercury chairman and chief executive Tyler Arnold and the label’s team had been “a great partnership”, adding that he felt inspired by the collaboration. Mercury is part of Universal Music Group.
The song takes its name from the title Mayer used when saving an early voice memo of the idea, he wrote on Instagram. Music Times reports that it was produced by Mayer and Blake Slatkin and features bassist Pino Palladino, drummer Aaron Sterling, percussionist Lenny Castro and organist Larry Goldings.
Mayer’s most recent solo album, *Sob Rock*, was released in 2021. The new single is scheduled to premiere on his SiriusXM channel, Life With John Mayer, on 22 October before its release at midnight, Music Times reports.
