Review information is loading.
Alexander Zverev’s first tournament as world No. 1 ended with a second-round defeat by Lorenzo Musetti at the Paris Masters. The Italian won 7-6 (5), 6-2, denying Zverev the title at the final Masters event of the season.
Zverev reclaimed the top spot on Monday after reaching the semi-finals in Vienna, which gave him enough ranking points to move ahead of Jannik Sinner. Sinner is injured, while Carlos Alcaraz is third in the rankings.
The loss follows Zverev’s defeat by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Shanghai semi-finals, where the German’s bid to reach the final also ended. Zverev’s Shanghai defeat came in three sets.
