Burrage sent death threats on WTA Tour return, BBC reports

Burrage lost to India’s Vaishnavi Adkar in the first round of the Chennai Open on Tuesday. Adkar won 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 after Burrage had led 5-3 in the deciding set.

Burrage’s previous tour-level main-draw singles match was a first-round defeat to Catherine McNally at Wimbledon in July 2025, according to the BBC. She had played qualifying matches in the intervening period.

After the Chennai match, Burrage shared an Instagram story showing her scrolling through direct messages, the BBC reported. “Nice welcome back to tour. I remember why I left,” she wrote alongside the video.

German player Eva Lys tagged the Women’s Tennis Association on Instagram and asked: “When will something be done?”
