The Dutch cabinet has approved Jonathan Johnson’s nomination as acting Kingdom Representative for Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, ahead of proposed changes to the office. The decision was announced on 25 September 2026. [1]
Johnson is due to succeed Jan Helmond, who has held the position since November 2017. The appointment is scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2027 and will be formalised by Royal Decree. [1]
The government says Johnson is being appointed in an acting capacity because the Public Bodies Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba Act, known as WolBES, is being revised. The proposed legislation would retain the representative’s office but change how it is structured. Ministers say the acting appointment is intended to maintain continuity during that process. [1]
Johnson, 50, was born on Saba and served as its Island Governor from 2008 to 2026. His responsibilities included public order and safety, crisis management and the quality of public administration. Before becoming governor, he held posts including principal of Saba’s secondary school. [1]
The representative links the Dutch central government with the three island public bodies, with duties covering good governance and oversight between tiers of government. [1]
