Coco Gauff says she received a large number of racist messages after a point was replayed during her win over Sun Xinran in Beijing.
Review information is loading.
Gauff beat Chinese teenager Sun 7-5, 6-1 at the Beijing WTA tournament. Late in the first set, she stopped during a rally after being distracted by a flickering advertising board. The point was replayed; Gauff won it and went on to take the set, according to an ANP/RTR report published by Nieuws.nl [1].
Gauff said on X that people could dislike her or disagree with what had happened without being racist. She said she had received an extraordinarily large number of racist comments and direct messages in the preceding hours [1].
Gauff said she spoke with Sun after the match, apologised for the situation and understood that Sun had accepted her explanation. She also described Sun as a great talent [1].
