Movember calls for Welsh men’s health plan after thousands die before 75

Men’s health charity Movember is calling for a dedicated plan in Wales, saying 6,793 men died before their 75th birthday there in 2024. That was 37% of all deaths among men that year, according to the charity’s analysis. Movember wants a Wales-wide plan with targets and clear responsibility for prevention, earlier diagnosis and support. [2]

The charity attributes 2,098 deaths among men under 75 to cancer. It also commissioned research from HealthLumen estimating that five conditions in men — including coronary heart disease, lung cancer and stroke — cost Wales about £1.35 billion a year in healthcare, lost productivity and unpaid care. Cardiff resident Ben Lidgey told the BBC he sought medical help after pain persisted for a week following an accidental kick in the testicles from his four-year-old son. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Years after receiving the all-clear, he said counselling helped him when his wife noticed changes in his behaviour. [1]
