New Scottish rules limit where larger businesses can display and promote certain foods, while leaving their sale and some discounts untouched.

Businesses with more than 50 employees can no longer put certain pre-packaged foods high in fat, sugar or salt at entrances, checkouts, aisle ends or designated queueing areas. The rules can apply to supermarkets and other retailers, including pharmacies and petrol stations. They restrict where covered products are promoted, not whether they can be sold. [1]
The restrictions also cover multi-buy offers, extra loyalty points and deals that give away a covered product with another purchase. Online retailers face limits too, including on promoting some foods on their homepages. Single-item discounts, such as half-price offers, remain permitted, while meal deals and “dine for two” offers are exempt from the promotion rules. Covered items in a meal deal still cannot be placed in restricted locations. [1]
Sugary drinks, confectionery, biscuits and some breakfast cereals are among the products affected. Public Health Minister Maree Todd said the restrictions could make healthier choices easier by reducing impulse purchases. [1]
