The Team Essent skater plans to race in late October after a groin injury, but says he is not yet back to full fitness.

Joep Wennemars said at a Team Essent presentation in Den Bosch that he was not yet back to full fitness after a groin injury. The 24-year-old speed skater said he planned to compete in the season’s first race in late October, although he did not know how fast he would skate. [1]
Wennemars said earlier complaints had persisted despite rest. ANP reported that an examination found a layer of tendon running from his abdomen across his pubic bone towards the muscles had come loose. He said the problem had developed gradually, prompting him to stop training and rebuild from the basics. [1]
He described the enforced break as the most emotionally difficult period he had experienced. He said he missed training every day and felt he had lost control of his body. [1]
The World Cup qualifying tournament is scheduled to take place at Thialf from 30 October to 1 November 2026. [1]
