Annie M.G. Schmidt’s childhood home in Kapelle, in the Dutch province of Zeeland, is due to open as a cultural and community venue on 20 May 2028, the writer’s birthday. The property on Kerkplein has been formally transferred to Stichting Bij Annie Thuis, the foundation says.
Plans include cultural activities, a social lunchroom and workspaces for people who face barriers to employment. The project will also house the piano of composer Harry Bannink, with whom Schmidt worked for many years.
The foundation is continuing to develop plans to renovate and make the building more energy-efficient. It still needs additional funding for the work and furnishings. Crowdfunding and donations helped make the purchase possible.
