Journalists at Tigrai TV told AFP that a drone hit the broadcaster’s headquarters in Mekelle at about 06:00 GMT on Sunday, 27 September. The station is a key outlet for Tigray’s rebel authorities, whose forces are fighting Ethiopia’s federal government. [2]
One journalist said staff fled after hearing an explosion elsewhere and that the station was hit shortly afterwards. The journalist described the building as destroyed. Photographs taken by an AFP correspondent showed a blackened, damaged façade and many blown-out windows. Another station journalist said Tigrai TV was off air. No casualty reports were immediately available. [2]
On 21 September, the federal government announced an indefinite suspension of Tigrai TV and barred other outlets from broadcasting its reports. [2]
Who carried out Sunday’s strike is unknown. The full extent of the damage and how long the interruption to broadcasting will last are also unclear. [2]
