The Dutch government plans to apologise in January to children removed from their homes whose families were affected by the childcare benefits scandal, ANP reported on 25 September. The plans were outlined in a letter to parliament. [1]
The letter came from state secretaries Claudia van Bruggen, responsible for justice, and Sandra Palmen, responsible for benefits, alongside youth minister Mirjam Sterk. [1]
More than 2,000 children from affected families were placed outside their homes, ANP reported. The agency described how large repayment demands from the Dutch tax authority pushed parents into debt and worsened family circumstances, leading to children no longer being allowed to live at home. [1]
The government announced its intention to apologise more than a year ago, but first wanted to determine what form the apology should take. It has worked with the Nationale Jeugdraad, the Dutch National Youth Council, with young people's wishes helping shape both the format and content of the planned apology. [1]
The government also plans to reassess the children's case files following requests from parents and young people. That work is separate from preparations for the apology. [1]
