Acceptance of transgender, non-binary and intersex people in the Netherlands has slipped, according to a biennial monitor reported by Dutch news agency ANP on 6 October. The monitor is conducted by Movisie with Ipsos I&O and Panteia. [1]
More than 80% of the 3,000 respondents said they accepted gay and lesbian people. But the share who found two men kissing in public offensive rose from one in five in 2024 to more than one in four in the latest survey. Karijn van den Berg, a senior researcher at Movisie, said a long-running rise in positive attitudes towards homosexuality had stopped for the first time. [1]
Reported acceptance fell from 54% to 52% for non-binary people and from 68% to 66% for intersex people. Just under two-thirds of respondents reported a positive attitude towards transgender people. More than a third did not regard trans women as women, a higher share than two years earlier, ANP reported. [1]
The monitor also examined wellbeing. ANP reported that LGBTQIA+ people experienced suicidal thoughts more often than heterosexual and cisgender people. Researchers cautioned that the wellbeing findings for transgender and intersex people were indicative because few respondents came from those groups. [1]
