Assistant coroner Isobel Thistlethwaite concluded that Hayden Jones-Powell’s death was an accident. His medical cause of death was drowning. The 13-year-old disappeared after entering Meynell Lake, off Fosse Way in Syston, shortly before 13:00 BST on 25 June. [1]
The coroner said Hayden had gone into the water voluntarily, despite telling friends he could not swim. The inquest heard he was with a group of 15 people after Wreake Valley Academy, where he was a pupil, closed early because of hot weather. [1]
His friends sought help, and teachers went to the lake to look for him. Emergency services recovered him at 20:15 BST. [1]
Hayden’s parents, Ben Jones-Powell and Emily Ambler, said he loved football and animals. They said they wanted him to be remembered for his big smile. [1]
