In a report published on 8 October, the BBC asked New Yorkers in their twenties when they would discuss their salaries with someone they were dating. Their answers ranged from waiting until a relationship was serious to seeing no need to exchange exact figures at all. [1]
Willa Morton, 25, who works in tech sales, said couples do not necessarily have to reveal their salaries. She has told her boyfriend she earns relatively little but has not asked what he earns. Alexa Ludato, 25, would wait until she was officially a couple with someone, while Vik Sunderaj, 22, said the conversation belongs in a serious relationship. [1]
Bridget Shurdut, 26, said a question about her salary in the first few dates would be a warning sign for her, although she would answer it. Emily Moretta, 26, said she and her boyfriend had not explicitly exchanged salary figures after two years together. She thought they might discuss them if they reached the point of moving in together. [1]
Dating and relationship coach Kate Mansfield advised having a different kind of money conversation sooner: talking in the first few dates about spending, saving, generosity, lifestyle and financial independence. The interviews reflect individual views, not a representative survey of how couples handle pay. [1]
