William Saliba has returned to full training, giving Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta more defensive options as the Premier League leaders prepare for a busy run of fixtures.
The France defender had missed the season so far with a back injury. Arsenal say they will be cautious with his return, and no timetable has been set for him to become a regular selection.
His absence has given summer signing Ezri Konsa a chance to establish himself alongside Gabriel Magalhães. Konsa has started seven of Arsenal’s nine league matches, and the team have conceded five goals in those nine games. Arteta has described the defender’s settling-in period as “unbelievable”.
Saliba and Gabriel formed Arsenal’s regular centre-back pairing last season, when the club won the league and conceded 27 goals. Saliba was also named in the PFA team of the year for the fourth consecutive time.
When Saliba is ready, Arteta could restore him alongside Gabriel and move Konsa to right-back. The 29-year-old has played there for England, while Arsenal’s usual right-back options, Ben White and Jurrien Timber, have both been dependable choices this season.
Arsenal have also managed injuries among their defenders: White has been available for all but one of the club’s matches this campaign, while young centre-back Cristhian Mosquera has recovered from a hamstring injury. More competition could reduce Mosquera’s playing time, although the club’s fixture load may give Arteta opportunities to rotate.
Arsenal host Hull on Saturday before the international break, which could give Saliba time to build up his fitness. The club played 63 matches last season, and Arteta will need depth if his side are to compete on multiple fronts again.
