The closure of the Merwedebrug on the A27 left drivers facing lengthy delays on alternative routes in the Netherlands on Friday. An ANWB spokesperson told the ANP news agency that queues had been unusually long since the morning and would probably continue for hours. [1]
At around 13:00, delays on the A2 were about 50 minutes in both directions. Drivers on the A16 faced a 20-minute delay, while queues were also reported on the A4 and A29. Roads connecting to those motorways were affected too. [1]
The bridge is scheduled to remain closed until 05:00 on Monday while a thinner asphalt layer is laid. The work is intended to lighten it and help it withstand the effects of construction of a new Merwedebrug beside it. A ban on freight traffic will still be needed. [1]
